Scripturizer Remix

Calendar Published October 8th, 2005 Author by Laurence O. Viewed 9942 times.

Scripturizer is a super simple WordPress plugin for automatically turning Scripture references into hyperlinks that point to online Bible sites. My new Remix version adds an administration options page which makes Scripturizer easier to install and configure. And the new Remix gives you the option to automatically include the ESV text of the verses you reference in your pages either dynamically or statically.

Special Update 7/21/06

Scripturizer has a new home on the web.

Update - 1/12/06

Please take note that Scripturizer Remix is joining the original Scripturizer plugin. Therefore, all updates will be released at the new Scripturizer HQ. Read the update notice to learn more.

Scripturizer Remix Features

  • Automatic Links: Automatically converts all of the Bible references in your WordPress posts, pages, and comments to linked Bible References
    • Supports any version on the BibleGateway plus ESV, NET, NRSV, and LXX
    • Links can be added dynamically (every time a page is viewed, the links are added) or statically (the links are added to the page permanently when a page is saved/edited in the database).
  • Admin Options: Scripturizer Remix comes with an easy to use administration options page. From here you can choose whether to run Scripturizer dynamically or statically, and you can control how verses are queried and displayed from ESV’s Web Service (optional).
  • Easy 2-Click Installation - No source code edits required!
    1. Download ScripturizerRemix
    2. Upload scripturizer-remix.php to your /wp-content/plugins directory
    3. Click 1: Go to the Plugins tab in your WordPress Administrator Console and activate the Scripturizer Remix plugin
    4. Click 2: Go to the Options tab in your WordPress Administrator Console and then select the Scripturizer Remix sub page. Either accept or modify the default values, then click the update options button to store your initial settings. It’s that easy!
  • Show/Hide ESV verse text: The Scripturizer Remix allows you the option to take advantage of the great free ESV web service offered by The ESV Bible. If you activate the show/hide option, the Scripturizer Remix will pull the text from the verse and put it in your page with a show/hide link. Adding the text of Scripture to your WordPress posts has never been so easy!

Show/Hide ESV Text Example

When show/hide ESV text option is turned on, the Scripturizer Remix will change a verse reference like Hebrews 2:1 to:
Scripturizer Demo Hide Link

Then, when you click the [+/-] link, it will display the ESV text like this:
Scripturizer Demo Show Link

Bug Tracking

If you run into problems when using the Scripturizer, please let me know via the Scripturizer Remix dialogue.

Credits and Scripturizer Resources

My Remix version of Scripturizer pulls heavily from the great work of Dean Peters, Glen Davis, Chris Roberts, and Scott Lang on the original versions of the Scripturizer.

Very rad….Thanks for sharing this with the WordPress and Christian blogging community!

Scripturizer Remix works great! (…providing you follow directions! I had forgotten to do the administrative steps, esp. the ‘update options’ button. After I did that, I went back to my posting as if to edit, opened it for editing, made no changes and just saved the post, and Scripturizer Remix swung into action and added the links. Superb!)

Will it only work in posts, or will it also work in WP’s “pages”? I’ve got an about page that contains my credo, along with scripture references to back my beliefs. It would be very nice to have this apply in that case.

Jonathan, Scripturizer works on both posts and pages.

I’m using 2.0 of wordpress. When I activate Kimi Flash Plugin (http://www.kimili.com/journal/39/kimili-flash-embed—wordpress-take-3) your plugin ceases to work. No error messages, just the links don’t exist any more.

Also in the future (with hopes you work with the ESV plugin guy), i’d like to be able to specify which bible i’d like to use on a case by case basis using tags.

Well… A solution for me was to lower the filter priority on flashembed:
add_filter(’the_content’, ‘kml_flashembed’,100);, where “100” is the priority (10 is default, and 1 is the highest.)

I’ll mention this to the flash plugin author.

    Hi Peter,

I’m not familiar with the Kimi Flash plugin, but my inclination is that your fix deals with the issue . . . the more plugins you have that filter through the body text of posts, the more you have to be careful with the order of filters. Filters tend to compete with each other on who goes first :-).

The current version of Scripturizer (1.1) is able to do per reference Bible version selecting. Just postfix the verse with an all caps version reference: i.e. John 1:1 NIV, or James 1:3 CEV, etc.

And yes, I am hoping to update Scripturizer to work with the “ESV plugin guy” as soon as I get back in town (within this week, D.V.).

This is a wonderful little tool!!! One question about it … is there a way to adjust for a passage in mulitiple chapters? For example, check this post on my blog …http://fcaoneyearbible.com/blog/2006/01/11/january-11th/

That first scripture link doesn’t work because it is going to another chapter. Would I have the same issue if I switched to the ESV (and the drop down type of presentation?)

Also, I didn’t realize I could select a version per reference … AWESOME!

  10. 10 LO

Jen, you bring up a good point with the multi-chapter references. I’m not sure the current Scripturizer can handle such references. I’ll add your request to the list of feature updates.

We are currently using Scripturizer 1.5fork (live) and 1.55 (test) and wish to continue to do so. We need a solution however for the multiple chapter span references. Over the weekend, I installed the ESV version on our test site. It has some nice features, especially the ability to span chapters which is why I tried it out in the first place. Our church, however, uses the NIV translation throughout our web site and CMS tools. The wysiwyg editor for our CMS FckEditor uses Scripturizer plugin as well. We found a hack to fix the chapter span problem here:

    http://www.healyourchurchwebsite.com/archives/001176.shtml

Where…Changing line 67 of Scripturizer.pm to the following should fix the extra space in the link and allow for an extra space between the colon and the verse numbers which was also requested:

    my $verses = qr{ \d (: \s* \d )* (?: \s* [-&] \s* \d )* }x;

Perhaps this info helps, or speeds along the process for allowing references that span more than one chapter (ex Genesis 1:1-2:3).

We value your tool and would like to continue to use it to help spread the Word!

    Hi JD,

We are currently using Scripturizer 1.5fork (live) and 1.55 (test) and wish to continue to do so. We need a solution however for the multiple chapter span references.

The latest version of Scripturizer (note: not Scripturizer Remix–the Remix is my old version) does just what you are seeking . . . it can handle multiple chapter spans.

Ok, I’m not sure if you are referring to my code or to Chris’ fine ESV plugin. Nonetheless, the latest version of the Scripturizer can link to the NIV simply by making references such as the following (just postfix “NIV” to the reference after a space):

Genesis 1:1 NIV; Psa. 2 NIV; Exo 4-6 NIV, etc….

Give ‘er a kick in the tires and let me know how she handles for ya.

    by grace,
    LO

Hey, great work on the Scripturizer Remix. How do I set the preferred Bible version to something other than English language versions. Like the German Luther 1545? How do I find the acronym that works? Thanks again.

  14. 14 Laurence O

    Hey Sebastian,

Presently, Scripturizer only supports the versions listed here. If you can provide me some links to sites that have the non-English versions that you are referring to, perhaps I can see about incorporating them into future releases of the plugin.

Also, FYI, the latest version of the plugin is found here, not on my site….

    the peace of Christ,
    LO
